LevelK at Cannes Virtual Market 2020
Things might be different this year, but we are still very excited to bring you our line-up for this year’s Cannes Virtual Market, as well as screening times.
Screening at the virtual market is our Nordic Horror BREEDER (complete) directed by Jens Dahl, director of 3 Things and co-writer of Nicolas Winding Refn’s Pusher. The film centres around Mia who discovers that a health supplement company has an underground facility where biohacking experiments are performed. As she begins to work out the truth she finds herself trapped, branded and tortured. BREEDER is written by Sissel Dalsgaard Thomsen (The Return) and produced by Amalie Lyngbo Quist (Cutterhead, Psykosia) & Maria Møller Christoffersen (Koko-di Koko-da) for Beo Starling.
Also screening at the market is our Icelandic documentary A SONG CALLED HATE (complete). In this provocative documentary, about the performance art group Hatari, who made headlines at last year’s Eurovision Song Contest, first time director Anna Hildur follows the group on their journey from Reykjavik to Tel Aviv and Palestine. The film has a strong executive producing team onboard in Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard, the directors behind the critically acclaimed Nick Cave starring documentary (20,000 Days on Earth), which won two awards at Sundance and was BAFTA nominated.
Our line-up also includes the Zaida Bergroth (Miami, Maria’s Paradise) directed Finish drama TOVE (post-prod) about the artistic struggles and unconventional personal life of Tove Jansson who found worldwide success from an unexpected side project and ended up creation the beloved world of the Moomins. TOVE is a captivating drama about the creative energy of an iconic talent and her turbulent search for identity, desire and freedom. The film is produced by Andrea Reuter (Dogs Don't Wear Pants) and Aleksi Bardy (Tom of Finland) for Helsinki-filmi.
We also present THE PACK (complete) a Czech teen drama about David, a talented 16-year-old-goalie freshly diagnosed with diabetes, who joins a new ice-hockey team, the Wolves, where he becomes the outsider, bracing the avalanche of bullying that gradually gains speed. The film is directed by first time director Tomáš Polenský and produced by Julietta Sichel and Jan Froněk for 8Heads Productions. THE PACK will have its Czech premier at Zlin International Film Festival.
In the animation department we have our lovely children's title RAGGIE about Ruby who is turning six and has her life in balance – but then her older brother Mark has to go back to school. To help her ease her loneliness Mark decides to make Ruby a new companion: a doll – Raggie, who comes to life. This changes the relationship between brother and sister, but also opens up for new adventures. RAGGIE is an Estonian/ Danish title directed by Karsten Kiilerich (The Ugly Duckling and Me) and Meelis Arulepp, and produced by Kristel Tõldsepp (The flight before Christmas) for A. Film Production.
Lastly, we have the British horror MARTYRS LANE (post-prod) about Leah, 10, who lives in a large vicarage, full of lost souls and the needy, with her parents, busy with their ministry and her older sister. In the day the house is bustling with people; at night it is dark, empty, and a space for Leah's nightmares to creep into. The film which is BFI funded is written and directed by Ruth Platt (The Black Forrest) and produced by Christine Alderson (Valhalla Rising) and Katie Hodgkin (Bruno) for Ipso Facto Productions.
