"Aswang" wins the FIPRESCI award at IDFA

Our high impact Filipino documentary "Aswang" won the FIPRESCI award at this year's IDFA, where it had its world premiere and competed in the First Appearance selection.

About the documentary, the jury said: "It is a film that tells us something that has to be said. A courageous statement of current politics and the power of media. But in the same time, it is a very human story, imbued with the subtle presence of folk legends. It is conveyed in a subjective form, creating a haunting visual and soundscape that evokes a broad spectrum of emotional reactions. The aesthetic choices stress the complexity of the story, creating a gripping cinematic experience." Cineurope called it "a valuable, informative piece of work and a brutal punch to the stomach for the international audience."

"Aswang" was filmed within three years in the country’s capital Manila, and is the first feature documentary about the state-sanctioned war against drugs to be directed by a Filipino. The film is directed by first-time feature director and Berlinale Talents alumna Alyx Ayn Arumpac. Armi Rae Cacanindin for Cinematografica produced the film in co-production with Les Films de l'oeil sauvage, Stray Dog Productions AS, Razor Film Produktion GmbH. LevelK holds world rights.
